Port Arthur Champ

In 1935 he won the Port Arthur City  Championship. He won permanent possession of the Guy Hooker Sterling Silver Trophy which had to be won three years in succession to retain possession. Conroe Flowers' successive wins were in 1939, 1940 and 1941.

Other awards have included the President's Trophy, a three-section sterling silver fruit dish selected by Fred Dodge and his wife. He was Port Arthur Country Club champion six years. Port Arthur City Champion three years and Groves City Champion two years. He also had a "grand slam" by winning the Country Club, Port Arthur and Groves Championship all in the same year.

The Jimmy Flowers Putter Company started about 1936 or ' 37 when Conroe said that he was a "scratch" golfer and started whittling out putter head designs. When friends liked the putters he started making them for others. He has shipped putters to all states except Alaska.

Although he only made putters he has 45 different models. He has made them for most of the great golfers, such as Ben Hogan, Dutch Harrison and others and recently made five for Marty Fleckman of Port Arthur.

Flowers has used the same putter, one that he designed and made, for over 30 years "because" I have gotten used to it. He first began playing golf in1926 while in college and played the first on the new Sam Houston Teachers College golf course. And drove the first ball off the Number 1 Tee Box.

The Jimmy Flowers Putter Company was housed in a small shop at 1424 Heisler, Port Neches, Texas.  He enjoyed working for Texaco so much that when he remodeled his putter shop he repainted the tables and walls  in company colors, grey, seminole red, green, yellow and white.

J.H Flowers retired from Texaco in 1967 and for the remainder of his life built his putters, played golf and did a little gardening.  He past away in 1983.
